The patient will be seen for an evaluation where any concerns can be addressed.

The evaluation consists of three components. The first component entails the collection of a client Case History. At Anya Viviers Speech Therapy this information is collected prior to the evaluation processes by completing our initial intake form so that the evaluating Lactation Consultant can review the client’s medical status, and background information prior to the evaluation. Second, the Interview. Most of our evaluations will start with an interview providing time to ask any additional questions regarding the information provided on the initial intake form, address parental/caregiver concerns. The third component will be a breast examination and breastfeeding observation to identify any signs that may be the cause of the mother’s feeding concerns. Lactation Consultants may help with the following:

• assisting with the non-latching baby during the early postpartum days / coping with a disorganized suck & protecting the milk supply

• coping with engorgement

• obtaining a deeper latch

• breastfeeding information and support when going back to work

• addressing “not enough” milk concerns

• coping with breast refusal

• help with baby with arched palate and other oral tissue concerns

• sore nipples or breasts

• breastfeeding multiples and premature babies

• breastfeeding after breast surgery

• help with nipple/breast conditions such as blocked ducts, milk blisters, vasospasm, thrush infections, Mammary Constriction Syndrome, etc.

• resource for medications in mother’s milk

• starting solids

Follow-up sessions will be discussed and recommended as necessary.
